Lars Johnson 2013 Recipient of Ben Walters Award
The 2013 recipient of the Anchorage Bar Association’s Ben Walters’ Outstanding Service Award is Lars Johnson. Lars has been a tireless volunteer for the Anchorage Bar Association Young Lawyers Section, where he has supervised both the Alaska High School Mock Trial Competition and the Race Judicata fundraiser for Anchorage Youth Court for the past several years. Lars’s skills with logistics and shepherding volunteers have proven invaluable in the successful growth of these programs. Through Lars’s efforts, hundreds of Alaska teens from around the state have benefited from the opportunity to learn firsthand about the judicial system by experiencing simulated or actual courtroom trials.
Congratulations to West High - Mock Trial Winners!
The 2013 Alaska High School Mock Trial Competition took place March 1-2 at the Boney Courthouse in Anchorage. WEST ANCHORAGE HIGH SCHOOL prevailed in the finals over South Anchorage High School before a panel of four actual judges from federal and Alaska courts. Eight teams, of six to nine students each, from around the state – stretching from Sitka in the Panhandle to Fairbanks up north – competed in four rounds of simulated trials, followed by semi-final and final rounds.
Each round, the team members either were attorneys or witnesses for the plaintiff or defendant in a civil products liability case. Students must make opening and closing arguments, examine and cross-examine witnesses, introduce evidence, and face and defend multiple hearsay or related objections. Teams are evaluated by a panel of attorneys and law clerks. The mock trial materials are provided by, and the competition hosted by, the Anchorage Bar Association Young Lawyers Section; for further information, visit www.alaskamocktrial.org.
The winning West High mock trial team is composed of Bennett Amodio, Austin Bailly, Isabelle Geddes, Kimberly Holdiman, Zoe Lowery, Abigail Spurlock and Sara Wise. Florina Altshiler, an assistant district attorney for the State of Alaska, coached the West High mock trial team. John Conroy and Daniel Rawlings are faculty sponsors of the team. The West High mock trial team has earned the right to compete as Alaska’s representative at the National High School Mock Trial Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 9-11, 2013.
